Watchman Candlestick
A current take on a low-tech classic, this chamberstick gets back to basics: no power, no batteries, and a dead phone, but a candle and matches, now that’s essential. Take it off the wall, and everything you need to light up the night fits perfectly in your hand (matches are stored in the base). The candlestick swivels to hang on the wall and to maintain its balance while walking down a long hallway at night… The candlestick is cast in both metal and resin, two very different materials, weights, and processes provide choice and a chance to reflect on how things are made and the tools we keep.
This candlestick was designed and made for the SHOP at the Cooper Hewitt Museum and was on view as part of the American Design Club and Roll & Hill exhibition, Curse the Darkness, 2008.
Made in collaboration with my frequent design partner, Tom Weis.
